Kitty's Loo® FAQs
Q: What makes Kitty's Loo better than the other cat toilet training systems?
A: Kitty's Loo® is designed for the cat’s use and instincts. The size of the hole is 5 ½” in diameter which gives ample room for the cat’s elimination and provides a roomy platform area to stand on. With this design, there is no stress on the cat while training; this increases your cat's success in becoming litter free. It fits ALL size toilet seats, round and elongated. The others are designed for your cat to use your toilet seat which is unsanitary and they do not fit ALL toilets. Kitty's Loo® comes with a drop in bowl with a mesh like bottom to allow for excess liquid waste to fall through and therefore having less mess and odor. This bowl is used to hold the pellet litter during the training process.
Q: How does Kitty's Loo® fit onto the toilet?
A: Kitty's Loo® simply sits on top of the toilet seat. There is a 1 ½” oval rim that is under Kitty's Loo's seat that keeps it from sliding off of your toilet seat. There are a set of grip pads that come with the product that can be placed under Kitty's Loo® (cat potty seat), outside the oval rim to prevent slippage between the toilet seat and the cat's seat.
Q: How does Kitty's Loo® work and with what type of litter?
A: First, choose the bathroom that you will be training your cat in and place the litter box there. You will sit Kitty's Loo® seat on top of a basic rectangular litter box. This allows the cat access to the litter through the hole of the seat and gets him use to standing on the platform of the seat. It helps to add a pinch of Litter Attract (bought at a pet store) during the training process. After a few days you add the litter holder bowl using a pellet litter such as Fresh News or a corn based type of litter like World's Best Cat Litter. Clean this daily. After about a week you will move Kitty's Loo® onto the toilet seat and remove the litter box. Show the cat where it is so he will know you moved it. Clean the litter holder bowl after every use. You will gradually taper the amount of litter down, until you aren’t adding anymore litter. You will leave the litter holder bowl empty for a few days, cleaning it after every use, and then remove it from the seat. Your cat is now using Kitty's Loo® without the bowl and now litter free.
Q: Will Kitty's Loo® fit my toilet seat?
A: Yes. It will fit ALL toilet seats round or oval. (Some oval seats have extreme concave seats, which is why we include nonslip grip pads to help prevent slippage) It will even fit toilet seats overseas in most European countries and in Australia and New Zealand.
Q: Will Kitty's Loo work with a bidet?
A: Kitty's Loo was designed to fit on top of standard toilet seats except bidets. Bidets tend to have a slop in the back of the seat that prevents Kitty's Loo from resting flat on the bidet's seat.
Q: How do I get my cat to begin to use Kitty's Loo®?
A : Kitty's Loo® is first placed next to a basic 10" X 14" (approx.) rectangular litter box. The large bulky litter boxes won't work. After a couple of days and the cat has been exposed to it, place Kitty's Loo® seat on the litter box. Make sure the litter box is clean and has fresh litter and with a pinch of Litter Attract in it. Show the cat this right after he eats, since cats tend to eliminate after they eat. This is the very first step and how they get to use to using a cat toilet seat for the first time.
Q: What is the measurement of Kitty's Loo®?
A: The platform of the seat measures 17” X 15 ½” and the diameter of the hole, 5 ½”. This allows plenty of room for the cat to position himself on the seat. The rim under the seat is 9 1/2” X 7 ½” with the lip measuring 1 ½”. The litter holder bowl measures at the top, 6 ½” diameter with the depth of 2 ¼” and the bottom of the bowl is 5”.
Q: What is Kitty's Loo® made of and where is it made?
A: It is made of ABS recycled material and is made here in the USA.
Q: How long will it take me to toilet train my cat?
A: Anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks. Remember it all depends on your cat’s litter box behavior, how well you know your cat, and how consistent you are when working with and praising them during their training. Every cat is different, so every cat will train at a different pace depending on your cat's behavior.
Q: Can I train multiple cats at the same time?
A: Yes. You can train up to 3 cats. In some cases, folks have trained just one cat and the others followed and used Kitty's Loo® without working very hard with them.
Q: At what age can I train my cat?
A: You can start as early as 8 weeks old or as old as 13 years. When training a kitten, make sure he is comfortable using the litter box. Then you can introduce him to Kitty's Loo®. When training an older cat, consider: Is the cat healthy and still agile? Is he able to jump up onto the toilet seat and land securely? Does he have good litter box habits? If yes, then you can train your cat.
Q: How do I clean and care for Kitty's Loo®?
A: For the bowl, just rinse it with mild soap and water and pat it dry, *Be careful with the mesh. The seat may be cleaned by wiping the top and underneath with a damp paper towel or wipe. Make sure you don't use harsh chemicals.
Q: What if I only have one bathroom?
A: Well, I had one bathroom when I invented Kitty's Loo®. What I did when I needed to use the toilet was to sit Kitty's Loo® on the floor or the edge of the basin. The rim under Kitty's Loo® will keep it from getting dirty, and this keeps your toilet seat clean.
Q: What if my cat drinks from or plays in the toilet?
A: Distract your cat by playing with him and make him follow you into another room. If he starts this once you have removed the bowl, don’t discipline him. Instead distract him by praising him for using the bathroom but have him come to you for the praise. Make sure you are praising him consistently, verbally and by giving him treats. If praise and treating do not work, you may want to purchase a cat water fountain.
Q: My cat pooed on the floor next to the toilet while training. What do I do?
A: All you do is pick up the poo and place it in the litter bowl or toilet bowl, whatever stage you are in, and praise your cat as if he did it. Don't punish him. He is still learning. This helps him to know where to go the next time. Remember he is learning that he can go pee and poo in the same area, not like the litter box.
Q: May I use an automatic flusher on the toilet?
A: As long as your cat is comfortable seeing and hearing the toilet flush when he is on Kitty's Loo® or next to the toilet. This will get him use to it. Do this first before installing an automatic flusher.
Q: I’m getting ready to move. When do I need to train my cat?
A: Wait until you have moved and you and your cat have adjusted and are settled in your new home.
Q: What if my cat travels with me?
A: Take Kitty's Loo® with you! Once you arrive to your destination, clean the toilet that your cat will be using. Set Kitty's Loo® on the toilet seat and show your cat where it is. Pet him and praise him while doing this. Let him smell it and know that it is his. If you feel you need to bring the litter bowl "just in case" to reassure him, then do that. You may want to put a small amount of litter in it. It all depends on how well you know your cat's behavior and how well he adjusts to new areas.
Q: What if my cat has an accident?
A: Don’t discipline him. If you discipline him in the bathroom where he is training, then he will associate discipline with the bathroom, and your training will not be successful. Just clean up the mess really good. Look first for anything that might have happened recently for the cat to react this way. Is the litter bowl and seat clean? Has the toilet bowl been cleaned? Have you been consistent in praising him every time he approaches, sniffs, or uses Kitty's Loo®? This is very important for your cat, so that he knows he is doing right and will continue to do so as long as he is getting something out of it.
Q: My cat has 3 legs. Can I train him to use Kitty's Loo®?
A: Yes you can, as long as he is agile and has good balance when jumping.
Q: What if my cat has to have surgery or has become weak due to sickness or old age?
A: You can place Kitty's Loo® back on the basic rectangular litter box or if he seems to have trouble with this, then remove Kitty's Loo® until he is strong again. Your biggest concern is making your cat comfortable and that he is able to relieve himself where he is allowed.
Q: What about toxoplasmosis?
A: Toxoplasmosis is a rare but serious disease that can be carried by cats, through their feces, which are infected with the parasite. They have to eat raw infected meat to pick up the parasite or it can be passed down through the mom at birth. People with weak immune systems and pregnant women are at risk. Contact your vet and have your cat’s feces checked for Toxoplasmosis and visit your doctor, if you feel you are at risk, before you begin training your cat to use Kitty's Loo®.
Q: Is my cat too heavy to use Kitty's Loo®?
A: Kitty's Loo® is made with ABS material and is made to hold up to 30 pounds once it is on the toilet seat. It may be too unstable while training from the litter box, so you may want to support it form underneath. Considering most cats weigh between 8 – 15 pounds, you should be safe.
Q: What comes with Kitty's Loo®?
A: You get Kitty's Loo® seat, the litter holder bowl, a step-by-step training manual, and a pair of grip pads. The grip pads are placed on the underside of the seat to prevent Kitty's Loo® from slipping on your toilet seat when you cat hops up and down from using it.
